International Symposium at the Centralstation, 10th und 11th of December 2010

Public symposium as a preparation for an international urban environment festival in June 2011 in Darmstadt in the framework of the Rhine-Main Summer of Architecture 2011. Around ten selected international players from research, art and architecture will be exhibiting their work and strategies on the topic of the „City of the Future“. Five players will be selected from the participants of the symposium, who will each then realise a workshop project with students and citizens in the urban environment of Darmstadt by June. The presentations will be given in English.

"stadtfinden", a space festival of a particular kind, addresses questions and objectives of the city of today and tomorrow.
Through the change in societies caused by globalisation, cities worldwide are faced with multi-layered tasks and problems, which can no longer be mastered with traditional planning methodology. How do we deal with empty spaces, density and with technologically and structurally older buildings? What defines this changeable, market-dependent city context and stays in our mind?
Actors from research, art and architecture from all over the world are invited in the framework of the Darmstadt Summer of Architecture 2011 to report on their different experiences, to exhibit them and to develop new ideas for our city in workshops jointly with students and interested citizens, to make them visible in installations and staging in public urban environments and to put them open to discussion.
A 24-hour symposium on 10th December is to let positions from all over the world have their say. The event is the start of a festival of urban environment staging lasting several days with workshops and realisations from 18th until 25th June 2011.
The participants make various spatial, political, sociological, historical and ecological connections in the city open to discussion. They cast their own personal glance on our city, work on different scales, deal with temporary/permanent installations or act in the field of temporary structures or actions.
