Together with the BDA (Association of German Architects), the universities, Deutsche Werkbund (German Association of Craftspeople), Architekten- und Stadtplanerkammer (Chamber of Architects and Urban Planners) but also urban representatives and private initiatives are to perform this event based on the example of the Darmstadt Summer of Architecture 2008. Consequently this project represents a consistent further development of our work with a high level of creative potential, which will be able to strengthen the perceptibility of the region internationally without mixing up the features and focal points of the cities with each other. Under the working title LIVING SPACE CITY the work groups from the individual cities are currently developing ideas on the topic of "Living and public space" at the various levels of observation. Special attention is being dedicated to the topic of "living“ and "public space“  in the city. In times of social, economic and demographic change, questions should be raised regarding which visions can be developed for urban space and free space in future.

The Rhine-Main Summer of Architecture 2011 is to be a source of inspiration for possible structural change and to assist in working out sustainable strategies for dealing with conflicts, energy, resources and space, etc. The region should hereby prove itself to be an open experimental field and living planners’ workshop. 

The polycentric Rhine-Main region has a diverse range of cultural and educational institutes. This promises a high participation of students and artists in the Rhine-Main Summer of Architecture. In addition interdisciplinary teams from all over the world will be invited to Darmstadt to play an active part in the Summer of Architecture. Players from research, politics and administration, freelance architects, urban and landscape architects, specialised journalists and citizens will be addressed and encouraged to actively participate and offer advice. 

The Darmstadt Summer of Architecture 2011 will, as it was in 2008, take place in close cooperation with the universities, Centralstation, the Kunsthalle, Mathildenhöhe and the State Theatre. A festival of urban staging will take place in the town centre from the State Theatre to the train station.
